Molecular weight average =mole fraction x molecular weight.

If we consider air, air has 79mole% of nitrogen and 21% oxygen then mole fraction with respect to nitrogen and oxygen o.79 & 0.21.

Then the average molecular weight of air=(mole fraction of O2 x molecular weight of O2)+(mole fraction of N2 x molecular weight of N2).

(O.21x32)+(0.79x28)=2.84.
=>29 apx.

0.79 * 28 + .21 * 32 = 28.84.

M= mi*yi.
M = MO2 * YO2 + MN2 * YN2.
yo2=21/21+79=.21,
yn2=79/79+21=.79,
mwt o2=2*16=32,
mwt n2=2*14=28,
M = YO2*MO2+YN2*MN2,
M = .21*32+.79*28,
M = 29.
