Chemical Engineering - Mass Transfer - Discussion
Discussion Forum : Mass Transfer - Section 2 (Q.No. 39)
39.
An aqueous solution of methanol is to be distilled in a tray column. High pressure steam is available as a source of heat. For a given reflux ratio and overhead composition, two options are being explored; (i) a reboiler is used and (ii) no reboiler is used but steam is fed directly to the bottom of the column. As compared to option (i), in option (ii)

The answer should be 3 because the boiling point of methanol is less than water so the steam will vaporize methanol and the residue will be diluted in terms of methanol.
So to achieve the same level of separation as 1. Extra trays will be required for the enrichment of water vapors in the top. An efficient separation.

The answer given is the correct one, i.e. option A,
Because if steam is fed directly into the column, the partial pressure will increase which reduced the boiling point of the water. It means easy separation at less number of trays.

Option D is correct. One or two more trays are required in open steam and rectifyinf section composition remains unchanged while we do material balance in stripping section.

The Answer should be D. Because the residue is more dilute in methanol.
