Fenske equation for minimum no of theoretical stages is:
Nm+1 = log(Xd (1-Xw)/Xw(1-Xd))/log (average relative volatility).
Nm+1 = log(Xd (1-Xw)/Xw(1-Xd))/log (average relative volatility).

The Fenske equation in continuous fractional distillation is an equation used for calculating the minimum number of theoretical plates required for the separation of a binary feed stream by a fractional column that is being operated at total reflux (i.e. , which means that no overhead product distillate is being withdrawn from the column).

It is used to find the minimum number of theoretical plates at total reflux that is there is no distillate collected and the relative volatility of the system is assumed to be constant to find this.
Underwood equation is used to find the minimum reflux ratio required for the column.
