The main purpose of providing fins on a heat transfer surface is to increase the heat transfer area.
By increasing the effective surface area ((A)) exposed to the surrounding fluid, fins enhance the rate of convective heat transfer (Q=hA δ T)) in situations where the convective heat transfer coefficient ((h)) is low.
