Square pitch (90/45 degree tube pattern) , is generally used for fouling service and systems in which available pressure drop is low. For example, exchangers in H2S service.

Square pitch means more distance between tubes, and hence less resistance for shell side fluid to pass, and therefore less shell side pressure drop.
