The ash retains the Sulphur & phosphorus and thus affects the quality of products in metallurgical furnace apart from increasing the slag volume. Besides, it may fuse and stick to the boiler tubes thereby reducing the heat transfer.

The ash content of coal is a crucial parameter for the coking process. Compacting of high-ash coals improves the coke quality. It has to be considered that their compacting can require higher stamping energy insert. Because of the higher density of mineral matter in the coal, stamping coals with higher ash content should result in a higher cake density.
