By simple mathematics, we see that our average velocity is greater than superficial velocity only because the area available for the same flow rate increases when we calculate superficial velocity.
Vs = Vavg*ϕVs = Vavg*ϕ.
So, Vavg>VsVavg>Vs.
Vs = Vavg*ϕVs = Vavg*ϕ.
So, Vavg>VsVavg>Vs.
