A reactor is generally termed an autoclave when it is a high-pressure batch reactor. Autoclaves are used to carry out chemical reactions at elevated pressures and temperatures, often significantly above atmospheric conditions.
This allows for the reaction to proceed faster or to completion, and for the handling of reactions involving gases that require high pressure to dissolve or react.

The autoclave is usually a heterogeneous batch reactor mainly used for high-pressure kinetic studies. The autoclave is typically a solid catalyzed gas"liquid reaction system.
