Gunpowder also known as black powder to distinguish it from modern smokeless powder, is the earliest known chemical explosive. It consists of a mixture of sulfur, charcoal, and potassium nitrate (saltpetre). The sulfur and charcoal act as fuels while the saltpetre is an oxidizer.

It is otherwise called as potassium nitrate. It uses the energy available when organic nitrates burn or explode and are converted to nitrogen gas, a process that releases large amounts of energy.
