Compression ratio r=V1/V2 determines how much of the inlet air [V1] (air-fuel in reality) is compressed [V2], which allows molecules to more likely come into contact, in order to react and combust.
For any heat engine, increasing r, increases efficiency as more molecules are combusted and more Work is produced.
