A compound having high heat of formation indicates a higher amount of energy is released during the formation of the compound so the compound formed will have lower energy and hence it will be more stable.

It is not always necessary that heat is released during the formation, it may also be absorbed.

Higher values of heat of formation (that is higher magnitude - negative values) , indicates a higher amount of energy released during the formation of a compound, which makes it more stable.

For example, if the enthalpy of formation of a compound AB is -1000 kJ/mol and that of AC is -1200 kJ/mol, AC is more stable than AB.
