Temperature measurement is based on the zeroth law of thermodynamics. Just Google it's statement.

In zeroth law the n number of bodies are said to be in thermal equilibrium if and only if the temperature of each body is same which forms the basis for thermometer scale where 0 degree C is taken as the freezing/melting point of water and 100 degree C for boiling point of water.

According to zero law of thermodynamics if three system A B and C if A and B are in thermal equilibrium with each other and B and C are in thermal equilibrium with each other then also a and c are in thermal equilibrium.
