In metaphase of mitosis the chromosomes line up single file along the equator of the cell. This aligning of chromosomes at the equator is believed to result from the action of spindle fibers which are attached to protein structure called the kinetochore of each chromosome.

In metaphase chromosomes are lined up at the metaphase plate and each sister chromatid is attached to a spindle fibre originating from opposite pole This ordering of chromosomes is important in making sure that each new cell that is formed will contain an equal and identical amount of chromosomes.
