Biochemistry - Protein Synthesis - Discussion

Discussion Forum : Protein Synthesis - Section 1 (Q.No. 8)
8.
Protein synthesis rates in prokaryotes are limited by the rate of mRNA synthesis. If RNA synthesis occurs at the rate of 50 nucleotides/sec, then rate of protein synthesis occurs at
10 amino acids/sec
17 amino acids/sec
25 amino acids/sec
50 amino acids/sec

@Anand.

Each of the three nucleotides encodes for one amino acid. So, 50 nucleotide/sec is 50/3 = 16.6 amino acid/sec. Hence, the rate of transcription =the rate of translation.

3 nucleotides code for a codon and 50 divides by 3 is 16.6 hence 17.

@Aarti Pant.

How did you calculate that value as 16.6?

It has been found that the rate of transcription and translation are nearly similar.

Rate of transcription = 50nt/sec.
As the rate of transcription = rate of translation.

So, 50nt will code for 16.6 amino acids in a sec which is near to 17 amino acids/sec.
