Cholesterol is an cyclopentanoperhydro phrenthrene nucleus ring. It has single hydroxyl group at C-3 which is partially polar and fused rings are non-polar at the terminal side chain.

Amphiphatic takes about anything structure both polar and non polar. Cholesterol would have been just non polar except for the hydroxyl polar group.

Cholesterol has a characteristic fused ring structure with oh at 3rd position the presence of hydroxyl group makes imparts slight polarity and the fused ring and alliphatic hydrocarbon chain imparts apolar nature. Thus, amphiphatic.
