There are five main classes of steroid hormones:

Glucocorticoids e.g: cortisol - involved in metabolism and immune response.
Mineralocorticoids e.g: aldosterone- regulate sodium and water balance.
Androgens e.g: testosterone- male sex hormones.
Estrogens e.g: estradiol - female sex hormones.
Progestogens e.g: progesterone - involved in the menstrual cycle and pregnancy.

All these hormones are derived from cholesterol and are lipid-soluble, allowing them to pass through cell membranes and bind to intracellular receptors.

Glucocorticoids: alclometasone, prednisone, dexamethasone, triamcinolone, cortisone.

Mineralocorticoid: fludrocortisone.

Vitamin D: dihydrotachysterol.

Androgens: oxandrolone, oxabolone, testosterone, nandrolone (also known as anabolic-androgenic steroids or simply anabolic steroids).

Oestrogens: diethylstilbestrol (DES) and estradiol.

Progestins: norethisterone, medroxyprogesterone acetate, hydroxyprogesterone caproate.

Classification of steroid hormones based on structure:

1. Cholestanes - ex. Cholesterol.

2. Cholanes - ex. Cholic acid.

3. Pregnanes - ex. Progesteron.

4. Androstanes - ex. Androgens.

5. Estranes - ex. Estrogens.
