Pyruvate is converted to lactate by lactate dehydrogenase enzyme during vigorous exercise.

It occurs in the cori's cycle. Where 2 molecules of pyruvate from the liver is transported to the muscles during strenuous exercise i.e. in anaerobic conditions the pyruvate is converted to lactate.
