Simply I can say reduction is true answer since it involve gaining/accepting of electron during chemical reaction.

The breakdown of C-C covalent bonds and loss of 2H+. Energy released is conserved as Reducing equivalents which are the primary electron donors in respiratory chain. In the later metabolic pathway, molecular oxygen is reduced into water after the completion of oxidative phosphorylation.
