The name phenylketonuria is derived from phenylpyruvate which are the metabolites of phenylalanine.

Why phenylalanine doesn't remain as it is, it is converted to phenylpyruvate?

Phe convert to tyrosine by enzyme called phe hydroxylase.

So when this enzyme deficiency phe convert to anther pathway which is toxic and result is phenylpyruvate.
