Discussion Forum : Time and Work - General Questions (Q.No. 1)
1.
A can do a work in 15 days and B in 20 days. If they work on it together for 4 days, then the fraction of the work that is left is :

1
4

1
10

7
15

8
15

Answer: Option
Explanation:

A's 1 day's work = 1 ;
15

B's 1 day's work = 1 ;
20

(A + B)'s 1 day's work = ( 1 + 1 ) = 7 .
15 20 60

(A + B)'s 4 day's work = ( 7 x 4 ) = 7 .
60 15

Therefore, Remaining work = ( 1 - 7 ) = 8 .
15 15

The reason why we've subtract from 1:

1 represents the whole work or complete work total work considered as 1(or 100%)

@All.

Why (A+B)'s 4 days of work is calculated?
Why it's not 3,5,6,7 or any other day?
What is the logic behind it?

Here it is given that A can do a piece of work in 15 days.

So now we can find the A's 1 day work whicvh is =1/15.

How did you get 7/15 after simplifying 7/60 ? Didn't understand the simplification of 7/60 to 7/15 Please explain.

Power of a=p1=w/15
Power of b=p2=w/20
Work is same so p1*15=p2*20
p1/p2=4/3

Now I do not know how to proceed. ?

1-((1/20+1/15)*4)==>1-7/15==>8/15.

This is easy method, I think. If any other easy method please give me.

@Fazeena.

The work completed in 4 days is 7/15. Therefore remaining work is 1-(7/15). So, total work is 1.

1/15+1/20 LCM of this is 60.
So,
(1/15 * 60 + 1/20 * 60)/60we can simplify this you can get (4+3)/60 = 7/60.
