3.
A father said to his son, "I was as old as you are at the present at the time of your birth". If the father's age is 38 years now, the son's age five years back was:
14 years
19 years
33 years
38 years
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Let the son's present age be x years. Then, (38 - x) = x

2x = 38.

x = 19.

Son's age 5 years back (19 - 5) = 14 years.

How can we use same variable for both son's present age and father's age at the time of birth?

38-x age of father at born time.

Here is the clarity:

Let present age of son = x.

Given father present age = 38.

According to logic when son age is 0 (during birth), fathers age is x.

Then when son's age is x, then father's age is 38.

So x-0 = 38-x.
2x = 38.
x = 19.

Then 5 years back of son's age it will be 14 years.

Hope you understood.

If f is the father's age = 38
And let the son's age be S or X.
And then 2x= 38.
So if the 2 go there in 38 side, it is a division
And then divide them = 19.
So in the question asked in the last, five year back it means -5.
So, 19 - 5 =14 so option A.

0-------------38
38-----------38+38 i.e.2*38.

From above we can conclude that son's age =father's age/2,
son's age =38/2=19,
hence,age of son before 5 years =19-5=14.

Son's age = 14 yrs.

@All.

Simply the calculation is; (father's present age - sons present age) = father's age at the time of birth.

But father's age at the time of the birth of his son = son's present age.
