A father said to his son, "I was as old as you are at the present at the time of your birth". If the father's age is 38 years now, the son's age five years back was:
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Let the son's present age be x years. Then, (38 - x) = x
2x = 38.
x = 19.
Son's age 5 years back (19 - 5) = 14 years.

Father's age now is 38; let son's age be x.
Son's current age = age of his father on his birth.i.e. x.
If we subtract son's current age from father's current age ie x=(38-x).
We get father's age @ the time of son's birth which is x.
And we observe father's age @the time of son's birth = x = son's current age.
38-x = x.

Father said "I was as old as you are at the present at the time of your birth" means that;
When son born that time age of the father is equal to the present age of his son.
The present age of his son = x.
Then father age = 2x at the current time.
So, x = 38/2 = 19.
Before 5 years = 19 - 5 = 14.
14 is the answer.

Here is the clarity:
Let present age of son = x.
Given father present age = 38.
According to logic when son age is 0 (during birth), fathers age is x.
Then when son's age is x, then father's age is 38.
So x-0 = 38-x.
2x = 38.
x = 19.
Then 5 years back of son's age it will be 14 years.
Hope you understood.

Present age of son is not mentioned, the difference between the father and son' age is also not mentioned then how can we take 2x.
2x means if sons age is 6 then fathers has double the age of son but in this, it is not mentioned all these things then how can we take like this? Anyone, please explain me.

38-x = y.
Here 38 is the present age of the father, and x is the present age of the son,
If we subtract 38 from x, we get father's age at the time of son's birth i.e. "y".
According to given condition, father's age at the time of son's birth = Son's present age.
Therefore here y = x means 38-x = x.

At present:
Age of son = x.
Age of father = 38.
At birth time of son:
Age of son = 0
Age of father = x.
As father grew son will also grow.
x - 0 = 38 - x
Think like person started at the same time and same speed but from the different location. Distance travelled by both will be same.

The meaning is [if father age is 30 @ past then son age is 0]
-----
Then [if son age is 30 @ present then father age is 60] that is
--------
The explanation... See that (the past age of father= the present age of son)
-----
Then [if son age is 30 @ present then father age is 60] that is
--------
The explanation... See that (the past age of father= the present age of son)

Father current year 38.
Son age consider x.
The sons age = father's.
Age at the time son's birth.
Father's present age - Son's age = Father's age
At the time of Son's birth.
38-x = x.
38 = x+x.
38 = 2x.
x = 38/2 .
x = 19.
Son's age 5 years back (x-5)=(19-5)=14 is correct answer !

38-x = x.
LHS RHS.
Keep the variable one side and numbers also a side,
We get,
38 = x+x (Because LHS-x when it will put on RHS then sign will be change as per rule).
Now, 38 = 2x.
38/2 = x (Here coefficient of x i.e. 2 will be denominator of 38).
19 = x.
You can say x = 19.

The son is as old as his father was at the time of his (sons) birth. Thus if you subtract the sons present age from the fathers present age you will find the age of the father at the time of the sons birth ie 38-x.
This must be equal to the sons present age.
Hence 38-x=x.
