3.
A father said to his son, "I was as old as you are at the present at the time of your birth". If the father's age is 38 years now, the son's age five years back was:
14 years
19 years
33 years
38 years
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Let the son's present age be x years. Then, (38 - x) = x

2x = 38.

x = 19.

Son's age 5 years back (19 - 5) = 14 years.

Let present age of son = x.
The present age of the father = 38.
Age of father at the time of his son birth = 38-x.

Father age at the time of his son birth = present age of the son,
38 - x = x,
x = 19
19 - 5 = 14.

How can his son be born at the age of 14? Please anyone explain.

Since "I was as old as you are at the present at the time of your birth= father is twice the son's age". So Son's age is x fathers age is 2x.

2x = 38.
x = 19,
Five years ago = 19-5 = 14 Years.

As we know,

Let 'x' be the present age of the son,

Past:
Son's Age = 0 (just born)
Father's Age = x(present age of son)

Present:
So, after 'x' no. of years, we can say;

x+x = 2x = 38,
x=19.

Answer Required = Five years ago = 19-5=14 years.

Present age of son is not mentioned, the difference between the father and son' age is also not mentioned then how can we take 2x.

2x means if sons age is 6 then fathers has double the age of son but in this, it is not mentioned all these things then how can we take like this? Anyone, please explain me.

The present age of the son = x.
They said the Present age of the son = the Father's age at the time of the son's birthday.
i.e. 38 - x = x.
we get x = 19
a/c to condition,
x- 5= 19-5 = 14 (Answer)

@All.

Here is a simple way to understand this:

f = 38 (f for father's age),
x = son's age today.
x = number of years passed since the son was born until today (same thing in different words)
x = the age of the father when the son was born.

The age of the father when the son was born + the number of years passed since the son was born = the father's age.

x + x = 38.
2x = 38,
x = 19.

Father's age = 38.

Now,
19+19=38.

Subtract 19 from 38,
38-19 = 19.

Than son age is 19.
and they ask about five years ago age so,
19 - 5 =14

Thankyou.
