In an election between two candidates, one got 55% of the total valid votes, 20% of the votes were invalid. If the total number of votes was 7500, the number of valid votes that the other candidate got, was:
2700
2900
3000
3100
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Number of valid votes = 80% of 7500 = 6000.

Total votes = 7500 and 20% are invalid 7500*20/100 = 1500, and 7500-1500 = 5000, and 5000*55/100 = 2750.

Invalid vote= 20%*7500=1500.
Valid vote =7500-1500=6000.
Therefore, 45%*6000=2700 (since 100-55=45).

@Shivani.

80% - (55% of 80).
=> (80 - {(55*80)/100} )%,
=> (80 - 44)%,
valid votes = 36%.

100X = 7500.
X = 75.
(100-20)X = 80X,
55% of 80X = 44X,
(80-44)X = 36X,
36X = 36 * 75 = 2700.

Why can't we do like this?
55% to a
20% to invalid
remaining 25% to b
so 25% of 7500=?

100% votes =7500,

then loser percentage is 36% so we can calculate ( 36 * 7500)/100.

A B
VALID 55% 45%
INVALID 20% 80%

45%/125% * 100 = 2700.

I think we have to put 35, instead of 45. As total valid votes are 85. Thanks.

Right Michael, the question has a correction. 7500 are total valid votes.
