In an election between two candidates, one got 55% of the total valid votes, 20% of the votes were invalid. If the total number of votes was 7500, the number of valid votes that the other candidate got, was:
2700
2900
3000
3100
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Number of valid votes = 80% of 7500 = 6000.

Valid votes polled by other candidate = 45% of 6000

= 45 x 6000 = 2700.

How to take 20% is the invalid out of 100%? Why can't to take 20% is from 55%?

Anyone can explain question format is right or not?

Other candidate got 25 % as 55 % to first candidate and 20 % are invalid means neither to first candidate nor to other one.

Here in question itself describe that 20% is invalid votes. Then how are we considered 45% votes for another person.

Total votes is 7500, invalid votes is 20%= 6000.
6000 * 55%=3300 valid votes and remaining votes are 6000-3300=2700.

In 55% votes only 35% of votes only valied therefore 35+45 is 80 to find total no of valid votes we do 80*7500/100

It is required to give total no.of valid votes instead of no.of votes, I got confused. Anyway, a nice question.

55% of 7500 = 4125.

20% of 7500 = 1500.

4125+1500 = 5625.

7500-5625 = 1875.

So 1875 is the correct answer.

Out of 100% votes 20% is invalid votes i.e. 100%-20%= 80% valid votes and 100-55%=45% other got these much.

No @Kuldeep, 20% are invalid. So 100 - 20 = 80% of valid votes. Why are you thinking of 85% of valid votes?

Easy solution is;.

(100-20)% of valid votes,
80/100*7500 = 6000,
45/100*6000 = 2700,
So, Ans= 2700 votes.
