In an election between two candidates, one got 55% of the total valid votes, 20% of the votes were invalid. If the total number of votes was 7500, the number of valid votes that the other candidate got, was:
2700
2900
3000
3100
Answer: Option
Explanation:

Number of valid votes = 80% of 7500 = 6000.

Valid votes polled by other candidate = 45% of 6000

= 45 x 6000 = 2700.

@All.

(100-20)% = 80% of valid votes.
80/100*7500 = 6000,

Then for one candidate it is 55% question for other so,(100-55)% = 45%,
So,
45/100 * 6000 = 2700.

I don't get it, the question is asking for "what is the total no of VALID votes the other candidate got?

If the 20% is invalid votes then from 80% valid votes.
1st candidate gets 55% then what is left (80-55) is 25% of valid votes.
Then that is the count of another candidate - 25%.

They are asking for valid votes.

Valid votes are 80% which is equal to 6000. In these 6000 votes A got 55% and the remaining valid votes are 25%. So the answer is 25% of 6000.

Total votes = 7500
Invalid votes = 20%
=>20/100 * 7500
= 1500.

Valid votes = 7500-1500 => 6000,
55% of 6000= 3300,
45%(other candidate)= 6000- 3300,
= 2700.

So, here lets us consider total votes be 100%.
So, remove invalid votes i.e 20 per hen we get 80 per valid votes.
Now in 80 per there are 55 per are valid votes so,
55/100*80=44 we get for one person,
In question, they mention other person valid votes so 80-44=36
100% = 7500(they are given).
36% = x,
X = 7500 * 36/100.
We get 2770 as final.

It asked to calculate the total number of valid votes that the winning candidate got.

So 1st person got 55% of total valid votes.
2nd person got 45% total valid votes.

So according to question 1st person should be winning right? because he has 55% votes more than 2nd.

In the question, it is nowhere mentioned that we have to calculate the total no of valid votes of 2nd candidate.

So how can the answer be 2700? Please explain me.

Valid vote for A = 55/100.
Number of valid votes = 80 * 7500/100 = 6000,
Valid votes pooled by A = 55 * 6000/100 = 3300,
So, 6000 - 3300 = 2700.

Base value 100% the invalid votes are 20% so the valid votes are 80% next one got 55%
So,55% of 80% = 44%.

The winner is 44% and the loser is 36% . The question is the total no of other candidates,
36% = x(unknown value).
100%= 7500(total votes), cross multiple
X*100 = 36 * 7500.
So, x is 2700.
