Because we have to find the cost of tax free item.
Cost of item on which tax is payed is Rs. 5 and the tax on Rs. 5 is 30 paise.
Cost of tax free items = Rs. [25 - (5 + 0.30) ] = Rs. 19.70.
Have a nice day!

There is an also another way.
1) The bought thing of Rs. 25.
2) 30 paise (0.030).
So subtract it 25-(0.030) = 24.7.
Then 30/6*100 = 30/6 = 5.
Subtract 24.7-5 = 19.7.
So here you get 19.7.

It's simple, the amount spent on tax = 0.3,
Rate of tax = 6,
So 0.3 *100 = 30,
30 ÷ 6 = 5,
Since 0.3 is the tax amount, we have to reduce that also, so 5 + 0.3 = 5.3.
25 - 5.3 = 19.7.
Rate of tax = 6,
So 0.3 *100 = 30,
30 ÷ 6 = 5,
Since 0.3 is the tax amount, we have to reduce that also, so 5 + 0.3 = 5.3.
25 - 5.3 = 19.7.

Table - Chair
15 - 5
By selling the chairs at 10% loss and the table at 10% profit, a total of 5% profit is made.
5%20 * 400 = 100 So cp of chair is Rs 100.

analyze this way... saletax on tax
6% is 30ps that is saletax on tax so find tax...
if 6%=30ps find for 100% u get tax
non taxable items = cost-tax-saletax = 25 - 5 - .3 = 19.70

@Scarlet.
Lets consider x is CP of chair and 400-x is CP of Table
(x*90/100)+((400-x)*110/100) = 400 *105/100.
Solve the above equation u vl get x=100.
So chair cost is 100.

60% of tax = 30 paise (As Per data).
Nowhere mentioned that 30 paise is a tax on tax. If so then tax won't be get calculated in the first place.
So, I think it should be D.

As the question ask for cost of tax free items, we have to deduct the cost of taxable items and the tax imposed them (tax and taxable cost are included in the total cost).

6 percent of taxable = Total tax = 5.
Total tax = Sales tax + Misc tax.
Since, she already accounted for the sales tax of 30p, in the beginning, we add at the end.
