Discussion Forum : Odd Man Out and Series - Find Wrong No. (Q.No. 1)
Directions to Solve
Find out the wrong number in the series.
1.
7, 8, 18, 57, 228, 1165, 6996
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Let the given numbers be A, B, C, D, E, F, G.
Then, A, A x 1 + 1, B x 2 + 2, C x 3 + 3, D x 4 + 4, E x 5 + 5, F x 6 + 6 are the required numbers.
Clearly, 228 is wrong.

The given series 7, 8, 18, 57, 228, 1165, 6996
And the given series in the format of
A, AX1+1, BX2+2, CX3+3, DX4+4, EX5+5, FX6+6, GX7+7
BECAUSE CHECK THE SERIES
A=7
AX1+1=7X1+1=8
BX2+2=8X2+2=18
CX3+3=18x3+3=57
Dx4+4=57x4+4=232 < Here is the wrong>
Ex5+5=232x5+5=1165 This is the process.

Initial value = 7
7 x 1 + 1 = 8
8 x 2 + 2 = 18
18 x 3 + 3 = 57
57 x 4 + 4 = 232 (But given number 228 is out of pattern)
232 x 5 + 5 = 1165
1165 x 6 + 6 = 6996 ... and so on.
Hope you understand the logic behind this problem. Have a nice day?

It can also be done as:
A, (A+1)X1, (B+1)X2, (C+1)X3, (D+1)X4, (E+1)X5, (F+1)X6.
i.e.,
A = 7.
B = (7+1)X1 = 8.
C = (8+1)X2 = 18.
D = (18+1)X3 = 57.
E = (57+1)X4 = 232.
F = (232+1)X5 = 1165.
A, (A+1)X1, (B+1)X2, (C+1)X3, (D+1)X4, (E+1)X5, (F+1)X6.

A = 7.
B = (7+1)X1 = 8.
C = (8+1)X2 = 18.
D = (18+1)X3 = 57.
E = (57+1)X4 = 232.
F = (232+1)X5 = 1165.

@Suvra Saurav
I think may be 96 is 196.
Because 196- 14^2.
169- 13^2
144- 12^2
121- 11^2
And there is "101" wrong number.
