Discussion Forum : Odd Man Out and Series - Pick Wrong No. (Q.No. 11)
Directions to Solve
Find out the wrong number in the given sequence of numbers.
11.
46080, 3840, 384, 48, 24, 2, 1
Answer: Option
Explanation:
The terms are successively divided by 12, 10, 8, 6, ...etc.
So, 24 is wrong, it should be 8 (48/6 = 8).

Above problem solution is below.
As above explanation I can just follow this instruction and give solution
first 46080 /12 = 3840.
Then second number 3840 / 10 = 384
Then third number 384 / 8 = 48
Then for fourth number 48 /6 = 8..but next number is 24 in
Sequence after the 48 ..that is wrong
So, 24 is wrong number in series.

@All
Your doubt is correct. But this is not finding odd man out.
We have to find the wrong term in the given sequence.
So first we have to find how the sequence is generated. From that sequence we have to find the number that deviates from its original value of the correct sequence.

Every number can be divided by even number except 1. i.e>
46080/12
3840/10
384/8
48/6
24/4
2/2
But one can only divided by 1.
So, we come to know that, the number we use to divide has of two difference except 1 and one is also odd number so the wrong number is 1.
46080/12
3840/10
384/8
48/6
24/4
2/2

Suppose if we go with the flow of multiplying 2 and 12 in a successive manner in the conjugate sequence then the product is equal to value as it exists. Hence 384 is making wrong to the statement.
1*2, 2*12 , 2*24, 12*48 ,2*384 wrong.
1*2, 2*12 , 2*24, 12*48 ,2*384 wrong.

The reason given says that the should be divisible by 12, 10, 8, 6... If that is the reason the the no. 24 is divisible by 4 which comes next in the sequence 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 (i.e. even no) but 1 is odd man in this series.

46080 is 5 digit no; 3840 is 4 digit, 384 is 3 digit, 48 is 2; 24 should not have been there, instead some single digit no. Should have been there, So I think it is 24 but my solution is different.
Am I right?

In the series first we have to observe the numbers 3840, 384 from that we come to idea that it should be divided by 10, later the next one with 8 and so on.
So we can decide that 46080 is divided by 12.
So we can decide that 46080 is divided by 12.

Here there are two big doubts:
1. The question here is how do you get to know that we have divide the first no with 12.
2. And next how we can know that next we keep decrements the divisor by 2 ?

Yup suraj is right. 1 can also be the answer and mostly when we need to finish each question with in a minute everyone will initially check whether all are odd/even only. Question maker is wrong.

From last multiply each number by first 6(2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12) even number.
1*2 = 2.
2*4 = 8.
8*6 = 48.
48*8 = 384.
384*10 = 3840.
3840*12 = 46080.
So 24 is wrong 24 replace by 8.
1*2 = 2.
2*4 = 8.
8*6 = 48.
48*8 = 384.
384*10 = 3840.
3840*12 = 46080.
So 24 is wrong 24 replace by 8.
