A dishonest milkman professes to sell his milk at cost price but he mixes it with water and thereby gains 25%. The percentage of water in the mixture is:
Answer: Option
Explanation:
Let C.P. of 1 litre milk be Re. 1
Then, S.P. of 1 litre of mixture = Re. 1, Gain = 25%.
C.P. of 1 litre mixture = Re. | ![]() |
100 | x 1 | ![]() |
= | 4 |
125 | 5 |
By the rule of alligation, we have:
C.P. of 1 litre of milk C.P. of 1 litre of water | |||||
Re. 1 | Mean Price
| 0 | |||
|
|
![]() |
4 | : | 1 | = 4 : 1. |
5 | 5 |
Hence, percentage of water in the mixture = | ![]() |
1 | x 100 | ![]() |
= 20%. |

For example he sells 1 liter of mixture =0.8 liter milk 0.2 liter water.
I liter is equal to 125% (100% cp + profit 25 %).
Thus cost price achieved by selling 0.8 liters of milk.
Profit by 0.2 liters which is 25 %.
125% = 0.2/0.8*100.
I liter is equal to 125% (100% cp + profit 25 %).
Thus cost price achieved by selling 0.8 liters of milk.
Profit by 0.2 liters which is 25 %.
125% = 0.2/0.8*100.

The solution is;
Water/milk * 100 is the formula for solving this.
Initially, water is 25% so remaining milk is 75% which makes W:M=1:4.
%water = w/total*100 and %milk= m/total*100 so %water = 1/5*100 = 20%.
Water/milk * 100 is the formula for solving this.
Initially, water is 25% so remaining milk is 75% which makes W:M=1:4.
%water = w/total*100 and %milk= m/total*100 so %water = 1/5*100 = 20%.

Formula is; (R/R+100)*100 So, ( 25/25+100)*100=20%.

I saw the important formula section but I'm still unable to understand the use of rule of allegation.
In every problem I come across I find it used in a diff manner.
Can someone explain it?

Is 25% gain means he must have added 25% of water. So if 100lts of milk is there then you have 25lts of water. So part of solution which is water is 25/125. Then convert this into percentage.

Initially, there is 100% of milk.
After he mixed 25% of water.
Now the mixture becomes 125%.
He asked what is the % of the water in the mixture.
25% in 125% is 20%.
So the answer is 20%.
After he mixed 25% of water.
Now the mixture becomes 125%.
He asked what is the % of the water in the mixture.
25% in 125% is 20%.
So the answer is 20%.

Let 100 liter of milk be 100Rs.
When 25% of water is added the total amt of mixture = 125 L (100L of milk and 25 L of water)
Therefore % of water in mixture is 25/125 * 100 = 20%.
When 25% of water is added the total amt of mixture = 125 L (100L of milk and 25 L of water)
Therefore % of water in mixture is 25/125 * 100 = 20%.

CP = 100 RS FOR 100 LITERS.
BUT ACTUALLY IT HAS 125 LITERS (25 LITERS WATER).
SO CP OF 100 LITERS BE RS 100.
CP OF 125 LITERS BE RS 125.
PROFIT = 125-100/125*100=20%.
BUT ACTUALLY IT HAS 125 LITERS (25 LITERS WATER).
SO CP OF 100 LITERS BE RS 100.
CP OF 125 LITERS BE RS 125.
PROFIT = 125-100/125*100=20%.

let assume milk to be 100..
After mixing water he gets profit of 25 i.e. he sell mixture (water+milk) at 125..
now percentage of water in full mixture is 25/125*100= 20%
After mixing water he gets profit of 25 i.e. he sell mixture (water+milk) at 125..
now percentage of water in full mixture is 25/125*100= 20%

SP of 1 ltr milk is Rs.1, then why is it written in the allegation chart that CP of 1 ltr milk is Rs. 1? Shouldn't CP of 1 ltr milk be 4/5?
