Directions to Solve
Harold a professional man who had worked in an office for many years had a fearful dream. In it, he found himself in a land where small slug-like animals with slimy tentacles lived on people's bodies. The people tolerated the loathsome creatures because after many years they grew into elephants which then became the nation's system of transport, carrying everyone wherever he wanted to go. Harold suddenly realised that he himself was covered with these things, and he woke up screaming. In a vivid sequence of pictures this dream dramatised for Harold what he had never been able to put in to words; he saw himself as letting society feed on his body in his early years so that it would carry him when he retired. He later threw off the "security bug" and took up freelance work.

I think this passage talks about the social security in terms of money one needs and he was sticking to his secured job, but when he overcome this axiety of secured job, he took up freelancing and hence A is correct.

Yeah, he was scared and was screaming out of his bed because his dream must look real. It is scary to see slug-like animal that are on human's body like it was reality. (no, I have not had a dream like that).

I think answer is D because what made dream fearful were those slimy creatures on him and on the people also it can clearly be seen that harold came face to face with reality after he woke up.

Society = bug/slugs.

So he works and society (slugs) are feeding off him. He makes that connection when he wakes up.

[A]. it brought him face to face with reality.

May be the answer is 'A' because once observe this sentence:

"Harold suddenly realized that he himself was covered with these things, and he woke up screaming".

Hello. D should be correct answer. The question asked about the reason why the dream was fearful, and not what was the outcome of dream or his final realization.

I am also in the Favor of option A because the conclusion of paragraph is that is Brought him to face to face reality.

So option A is correct.
