Hello readers.
Call me Mr X.

I would like to share my placement paper details and a bit of interview experience.

Warning!
======
Some of the answers I gave to my interviewer should not be attempted unless you have a really good way with words. I was just lucky that I got away with it and lived to fight another day. If your communication skills are not that polished then please do not at any rate attempt to impress your interviewer with the type of answers I gave.

Group Discussion:

The first elimination round was Group Discussion, English proficiency is a must. Our topic was what our convener decided that something in which we can all participate into. There is a catch even if you are not too great in English. You must be willing to participate in the discussion. Make yourself heard. A friend of mine got eliminated because she didn\'t say stuff loud enough in the bedlam of voices. In my group of 14, 9 went to the aptitude paper.

Placement paper:

These were questions were from sections as rightfully said by other guys in other reviews, however there were a few things that were different in my case.

First of all the test was technically being conducted via AMCAT (google it up) and the test was an adaptive test. That is first you mark your answer in the test module. If your answer is correct then the next question you get is more difficult than the previous. In my opinion there were only three levels of difficulty.

Also there was this major hurdle that once you mark a question\'s answer as confirm and then click next question, you cannot go back to that question. There is a technical section in the paper but the questions asked were very basic in nature. They included stuff from time complexities and data structure and the like. About a total of 73 qualified from a handful of 150 who cleared the GD.

Essay writing:

This was explained to us that it was not an elimination round and so we just needed to write whatever came to our mind about a certain topic. Time limit was ten minutes (tentative) and my topic was "The art and Era of Letter Writing". It was a breeze for me although not writing english essays for a period of about 3 years at a stretch had greatly reduced my writing ability, still I somehow managed to write about two pages of the stuff.

Interview Experience:

Our\'s was the last batch and the HR\'s were visibly tired. We were supposed to have two rounds, one for Technical Interview and another for HR Interview. But being very late in the evening (at about quarter to ten) they just took our technical interview and they left it at there.

This is more or less a comprehensive summary of my interview experience.

From here on out I will refer to myself as "I" and the Technical HR as "T"

I: Good evening sir, may I come in? (although I was partially inside)
T: Yes Please come in. My name is Mr Y (sorry I won\'t disclose the real name). Please take a seat.

I: Thank you Sir.

T: So your name is X? Did I pronounce it correctly?
I: No sir its X.

T: X?
I: Close enough Sir. (With a smile)

T: So X give me an Introduction about yourself.
I: Sir just for clarification do you want to know "something" about me? or Do you want to know about me? (I guess this was not too risky as I was just asking for clarification, still it should be avoided if possible)

T: A short Bio-Data will suffice.
I: Well sir I am X, resident of abc, passed 10 from Def, 12 from the same school, scoring ert % and fgh % respectively in the years and n+2, after that I appeared for wbjee and got xyz rank and via counselling i got into abcdefgh college in the dept C.S.E., and after 3.5 years I am sitting in front of you.

T: Family background?
I: Father\'s a govt. employee, mother\'s a home maker.

T: Are you the only child?
I: Yes sir, no other siblings.

T: Okay X, tell me why the C.S.E. dept? Why not Civil, Electrical, Mechanical? (point to be noted that I wasn\'t prepared for this question.)
I: Truth be told sir I was not really interested in CSE at first. Because when I got my wbjee rank I wanted to go with the flow of things and how my other friends were going into ME, EE and CE. But my father suggested that don\'t go with the flow. Instead do something which I liked. I realized that since class KG to 12 that is for a span of 13 years I have had constant exposure to a Computer, first learning PC LOGO, the BASIC (Beginner\'s All purpose Symbolic Instruction Code), then JAVA (Just Another Virtual Approach), so it has left a profound influence in me. Hence CSE was a logical choice of subject preference in college.

T: Okay tell me a subject.
I: Sir, Networking.

T: Something else.
I: Sir course subject or programming language.

T: Programming language.
I: Well Sir I know C programming.

T: So you\'re good in C programming you say? (sounded menacing)
I: Well sir only the creamy parts of the language (with a laugh) not the obscure parts which are known only to Dennis Ritchie and Brian Kernighan, the inventors of C language.

T: (Disappointed I guess) Okay can you tell me what is an Armstrong number?
I: Yes sir, An armstrong number....... blah blah

T: Write a program for it.
I: Sir may I use Java to write the code?

T: (taken aback because I said C is my language of choice) yes you can. (danger 1: risky call)
I: Thank you sir, started writing.,

T: Are you done?
I: Yes sir. Showed him.

T: Explain to me the program.
I: Started by why I imported which package and stuff blah blah

T: Just explain the logic. (Maybe he got convinced I know my JAVA background)
I: Sorry Sir, I thought you wanted to know the entire thing. Sir I have used a while loop and stuff.

T: Its okay I guess, but are you sure it\'s going to work if I code it in the machine?
I: Yes sir absolutely!

T: Are you absolutely sure?
I: Yes Sir, I can place my potential job on the line for the accuracy of the program. (BIGGEST MISTAKE!! DO NOT and I mean ABSOLUTELY DO NOT try this in a real interview, I was just lucky that I didn\'t get kicked out right away.)

T: Okay we will see about that. Do you know Bubble sort?
I: Yes Sir.

T: Can you do a program for the same? Just the logic bit.
I: I can try sir.

T: Very well then start working.

(after 2 mins)

T: Are you done?
I: Just a second sir, done!

T: Explain it to me.
I: Explained the working theory in Pseudocode.

T: Are you sure this will work?
I: Sir that I can tell after trying the code out after writing a valid code.

T: Very well then. Your interview is over. Do you have any questions for me?
I: Yes sir.

T: Please ask me then. (Happily)

I: Sir is there any formal method of progressing in Wipro?
T: You will be graded according to your performance. blah blah

I: Sir how long does it take for training considering the fact that I am from CSE Dept and have some amount of technical knowledge pertaining to IT industry already?
T: blah blah

I: Sir if you don\'t mind I have one more question I just need to refer my cell phone for this, I have written it there (Big mistake!)
T: Can you not save it for the HR interview? As it is already very late. And there are still a few candidates left for the interview.

I: Sir I will only be a moment.
T: Okay then,

I: Sir will I be given preference to work in a particular debt say like networking or software dev?
T: Again same thing about performance and blah blah

I: Alright, Thank you sir. I\'ll be off then.

That concluded my interview and we waited till 10:30pm to hear if we will have an HR round.

Luckily there wasn\'t any and we went home right away.

Thanks for reading.

I will be sharing my next experience with iGATE soon.

Till then stay tuned.

Mr. X Over and out!
