Hi Friends
This is Prasanta Acharjee from Kolkata, 2006 pass out student from Asansol Engineering College, I got selected in IBM.
I had IBM off-campus exam on 18-04-2007 at Techno India College campus, Kolkata. There at around 800 students appeared from 10 different engg. Colleges of West Bengal, out of which 103 were selected for Technical-Hr round held on 20-04-2007, out of which 41 students were finally selected, I was one of them.
As I got immense help from this site, so I m supposed to share my experience with all of u and I m heartily thankful to all the coordinators of this site.
ROUND 1 (WRITTEN TEST):
The aptitude test was very easy. We were having 55 questions to solve.
There were 4 sections:
1:VERBAL(10 quens.)
There were questions on prepositions, fill in the blank with correct word. Solve these first as they are very easy. then there was a passage. Try to do this at last
2: APTITUDE (25 quens.)
Logic based questions and some questions on probability. there was a question which was to be solved by Venn diagram. It was having 3 sub questions. some questions from blood relation problem. Puzzle test, data sufficiency, direction test, time distance speed, profit loss, percentage problems.
R.S.Agarwal (both part) is enough for this part
3: ANALYTICAL ABILITY (10 quens.)
Find r these alike
XXXYYJJGCFHKL XXXYYJJGCFTKL XXXYYJJGCFHKL .3 questions of this type.
This is very easy try to attempt it first. There were questions like $represent 1 and * represents 0.there were 5 questions on this type. Like evaluate $$*$$^$*. they are time consuming. use binary numbers concept. There was question like * represent +,/ represents - and so on. there were around 3 questions. Evaluate expression as 3/4+6....
R.S.Agarwal (Reasoning part) is enough for this part also.
4: COMPUTER FUNDAMENTAL (10 quens.)
They asked the output of small C language command. 2 questions were on UNIX commands some question were on SQL/DBMS.
As I m from Electronics dept. so made sum assumptions on DBMS, UNIX part, for C-part Test Your C Skills by Y.Kanitkar is more than enough.
This was all about aptitude.
Then PASSAGE WRITING Part, remember it has been recently included in written part and its mandatory. Then they told us to write an essay on "IT Industry", in others room another topic was given, so have sum knowledge on current affairs, 15 minutes were given to complete for this section, try to make it impressive. They may ask question on essay like why do you think so.....
This was all about written part
-----------------------------------
Now I m sharing my Technical-HR experience, After 2 days from written exam I had my Technical-Hr round on 20-04-2007 at around 11 am, after eliminating from CTS & TCS HR round I was little bit nervous, there was only one person, 32-35 years old (approx). After waiting 1-30 hrs, at12-30 pm I was taken to the interview room
ME: Good morning sir.
HR: Good morning, plz b seated.
ME: Thank you sir,
HR: Plz give me 2 mins to read the passage what u have written here (as we are given a passage told earlier).
ME: Definitely sir(with smile).
HR: ok, Prasanta within very short time introduce yourself.
ME: fluently told including my hobbies, strength, weakness also.
HR: This is the copy of ur driving license, how much will u mark urself in driving?
ME: As I hav given my Xerox copy of driving license as my id proof, I was asked such type of question, I fluently answered all of them.
ME: sum questions on my hobby, here I wud suggest that b confident.
HR: OK lets cum to the technical part,
ME: definitely sir,
HR: wat r the languages tha u know?
ME: I know C and having a very little concept on Java.
HR: what r the differences between Array and Linked list?
ME: explained with diagram.
HR: what is pointer?
ME: explained with diagram.
HR: wat is the advantage of linked list over array and that of array over linked list?
ME: I told the advantage linked list over array but didn\'t answer that of array over linked list, then i clearly told sir I don\'t know the advantage of array over linked list apart from the programmer\'s knowledge of pointer.
Here I want to say 1 thing that if u don\'t know the answer properly clearly say sir I don\'t know, that might not create any bad impression abt u.
HR: OK, u have written Collection of railway tickets is ur hobby, what do u do with these?
ME: Till nw I have done nothing with these, but I have sum plan to do something.
HR: wat is that plan?
ME: when I wil b 50 years old, I wil have a big collection of that, I wil make sum architectural design which wud b a unique thing.
HR: lets cum to the technical part again?
ME: Definitely sir.
HR: Do u have any concept on OOPs?
ME: very little bit sir.
HR: Wat do u no abt OOPs?
ME: It is object oriented programming having some features which make a difference from procedure oriented language like C. Among OOPs I no JAVA little bit.
HR: what r that features?
ME: Data abstraction, polymorphism, Inheritence, encapsulation ....
HR: ok I understood, can u explain encapsulation briefly?
ME: I clearly explained abt encapsulation, also I specify public-private-protected access specifier little.
HR: wat is the difference btn private and protected?
ME: I told him clearly.
HR: do u no method overloading and method overriding used in JAVA?
ME: I clearly explained everything including an example.
HR: wat r the advantages of these?
ME: Apart from providing the security, flexibility they also prevent access on code used in the program from the outside of the program,
I understood my answer didn\'t impress them so much
HR: Do u no early binding and late binding?
ME: Told him explaining run-time polymorphism
HR: ok, till nw do u play cricket regularly (as I hav mentioned playing cricket as my extra curricular activities)?
ME: no sir, actualy I don\'t get much time to play except sunday, not every Sunday but sometimes when I get time to play on that day, I don\'t miss it.
HR: According to u wat will b the probable cause of elimination of Indian cricket team from world cup-2007?
ME: I was not prepared of such type of questions, I told wat i thought instantly without any pause.
HR: wat is ur role in your team?
ME: I told,.... consecutively I was asked approx 8-10 quens regarding my interest on cricket, I understood that actually he was trying to find discrepancy in my statement-------he was asking like these hw do u bowl, wat is ur bowlin average speed, fast or spin bowler, how much do u mark urself in bowling out of 10, hw do u bat ----------------------------------
So here I want 2 say that whatever u wil say say it confidently and fluently.
HR: what is ur dream company?
ME: In spite of being a student from electronics engg it has been my dream to b a part of IBM family, it is nw and it wil b also.
HR: It wil b -----means?
ME: If i don\'t get chance 2day & in future I wil b working in any software firm definitely I wil try to switch to IBM.
HR: OK, the last quens I want to ask-----what wud u do if u wil b recruited as a Coach of Indian Cricket team and Captain of Indian Cricket team?
ME: (I never expected that such type quens wud b my last quens)---I told what I thought instantly.
HR: Its been very pleasure to meet with u, u just wait outside.
ME: At that time I thought probably I have cracked the interview.....
This is all abt my interview experience. Remember 1 thing that always try to b frank with them, they (IBM HR Persons) r really very co-operative, helpful and friendly. My interview was running during 40-45 mins. Try to maintain eye-contact with the HR person, b confirm what u r saying, ald obviously b confident and fluent in speaking.
Best of luck to all of u, meet with u at IBM Kolkata.
