HCL TECH (ISD) Interview Experience - MATHURA, 14th NOV 2014
HCL visited our campus on 14th Nov. Usually they plan to visit in March, but this time they were quite early also we did'nt had pool campus because for the last 3 years they conducted a pool campus drive in our college itself.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA - 60%, Throughout Academics (No standing Backlogs).
ELIGIBLE BRANCHES - B.TECH (CSE, ECE, EEE).
NO OF STUDENTS ELIGIBLE - 220.
Let me tell you guys about myself. I am from ECE with 64% (till 6th semester).
Following were the ROUNDS.
1) OFFLINE GRAMMAR TEST - 20 QUESTIONS IN 10 MIN :
TIPS- Friends round was quite easy and cutoff was around 13 marks. An average student can easily clear it. You need to maintain your speed because allowed time is not sufficient. Be calm and read a question twice before answering.
HOW TO PREPARE- What I did was, I downloaded a grammar app in my phone and solved at least 50 quest per day. Since paper was comprising of tenses, adjectives, prepositions etc. It was quite easy to clear this round.
AROUND 121 STUDENTS CLEARED THIS ROUND.
2) PRESENTATION :
Technically it wasn't a round but they told some very important points like how HCL came into existence, what are their revenues for current financial year , what are the areas in which it deals etc etc . It was just to check how well we can listen and how fast we can understand our employer .
3) FACE 2 FACE COMMUNICATION/INTERVIEW :
Guys this round was like a nightmare because maximum number of rejections took place. If you are going for HCL always remember HR is going to grill you like anything.
Our HR was a lady but her tone made me go nuts. Even though I was quite confident but her pitch made me nervous.
We were divided in a group of 60 students and we were asked to sit in a big hall. After 1 hour the same lady came and started calling our names. I was 9th in the order.
HR- YOUR NAME PLEASE.
ME- Good afternoon mam, my name is xyz (she started staring me as if I have done a blunder mistake).
HR- SO, HOW. ARE YOU XYZ ?
ME- Fine Mam
HR- YOUR FAVORITE COLOR ?
HR- OK, SPEAK ABOUT COLOR PINK.
ME- (!!!!For a second I was like what the hell is this !!!!) still I started speaking. blaahh blaahhh blaahhh... and continued till she asked me the next question.
HR- OK, SPEAK ABOUT PLANET EARTH.
ME- (Now this was quite sensible and far better then the last one). Again I spoke for about
HR- OK Mr XYZ. GIVE ME 2 REASONS FOR NOT HIRING YOU.
ME- I went blank for 5 sec and in turn I asked her why would you hire me if I give you those reason.
HR- WITH A WICKED SMILE. STILL I WANT TO KNOW XYZ.
1) I AM A LAZY PERSON.
2) I CANT WAKE UP EARLY IN THE MORNING.
(It was funny in fact she started smiling after hearing this)
HR- NOW ITS STORY TIME "suppose that you are walking on a road and suddenly you saw thousands of horses and elephants falling from the sky and you."
ME- Started in a slow pace but I was able to answer this.
(Let me tell you she was quite impressed and directly asked for my resume)
TIPS- SPEAK WHATEVER YOU CAN, BE A BIT CREATIVE WITH YOUR ANSWERS, DON'T STAMMER, MAINTAIN EYE CONTACT WITH HR WHILE SPEAKING, DON'T HESITATE.
They shortlisted only 21 students and we were quite lucky to clear this round. Friends if you clear these two rounds be assured that you are through with HCL.
4) TECHNICAL PI :
Again we were asked to wait for 1 hour and then we were called one by one and
again I was 9th in the order (surprisingly my code was A-99). It was 3 pm that time and I haven't had my lunch nor my breakfast, I was starving, nervous, sweating and excited.
They called my name, this time HR was a guy around 26.
HR- HI XYZ, HOW ARE YOU?
ME- FINE SIR, GOOD AFTERNOON.
HR- ARE YOU NERVOUS?
ME- NO SIR.
HR- WHY DIP IN PERCENTAGE?
HR- HONESTLY ANSWER WHY "IT" BEING AN ECE STUDENT?
ME- VERY CONFIDENTLY. I AM INTERESTED IN NETWORKS.
HR- I SAID GIVE ME AN HONEST ANSWER.
ME- NO CORE JOBS SIR (I was shocked, I was amazed, he caught me)
HR- HAHA...THAT IS WHAT I WANTED TO KNOW, OK YOU SAID YOU LIKE NETWORKING?
ME- YES SIR, IN FACT ONLY SUBJECT I LOVED.
(FROM THEN HE ASKED ABOUT 13-14 QUEST FROM NETWORKING)
TCP/IP, OSI LAYERS, SWITCHES, ROUTERS, SUB NETTING, IPV4, IPV6, TCP LAYER PROTOCOLS etc.
HR- ARE YOU OK WITH C?
ME- YES SIR, BUT WITH BASIC C.
Diff b/w C & C++, WHAT IS # IN A C PROGRAM ITS WORKING ETC.
HR- CAN YOU TELL ME SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR PROJECT.
ME- EXPLAINED HIM IN A VERY PRACTICAL MANNER.
HR- HOW PAN AND WLAN ARE DIFFERENT?
HR- ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS?
ME- HOW CAN I CONTINUE WITH MY PASSION IN HCL i.e MUSIC.
HR- JUST COME TO HCL YOU WILL HAVE AMPLE OF CHANCES TO PROVE YOUR METAL.
ME- THANK YOU SIR (with a smile).
HR- OK XYZ, YOU CAN LEAVE FOR NOW AND WELCOME TO HCL.
ME- THANK YOU SIR AND HAVE A GOOD DAY.
His last sentence was telling me a lot of things. I was happy that I gave my best shot even though it was my 1st ever PI, I was able to make it my last one.
Technical PI lasted for 25 min and 18 students were selected out of 21.
5) HR PI :
Normally HR rounds are for formality but in our case they eliminated around 5 students. Yes we were shocked but we can't do anything for that.
HR- HOW WAS YOUR DAY?
HR- WHAT HAVE LEARNED IN 3 YEARS OF COLLEGE LIFE?
HR- WHAT IS P-SPICE? (I have mentioned P-SPICE in tools expertise section of my resume).
ME- EXPLAINED HIM IN LAYMAN TERMS WITH REAL LIFE EXAMPLES.
HR- ARE YOU WILLING TO RELOCATE?
HR- WHAT ABOUT OUR SERVICE BOND AND 24*7 WORK ENVIRONMENT?
ME- NOT A PROBLEM SIR.
HR- WHY HCL, WHY NOT SOME OTHER FIRM?
HR- THANKS XYZ, HAVE A GOOD DAY AND ALL THE BEST .
ME- THANKS SIR, ANY FURTHER SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT.
HR- KEEP SMILING LIKE THIS.
ME- THANK YOU SIR.
RESULTS WERE DECLARED ABOUT AN HOUR LATER AND 13 SELECTED CANDIDATES WERE ASKED TO WAIT FOR 30 MIN.
We were asked to settle in computer lab for our last round which was AMCAT based Aptitude round conducted by aspiring minds.
6) APTITUDE ROUND :
- 25 QUEST IN 35 MIN QUANT SECTION.
- 25 QUEST IN 25 MIN VERBAL SECTION.
- 25 QUEST IN 25 MIN LOGICAL SECTION.
Quant was easy, questions from LOG, HCF & LCM, SPEED DISTANCE, FUNCTIONS, PERCENTAGE, PROFIT LOSS were dominating the section.
Verbal was basically of RC's, SYNONYM, ANTONYM, JUMBLED PHRASES.
Logical was a bit tricky BLOOD RELATION, DIRECTION SENSE, CODING DECODING AND A BIT OF ANALOGY'S.
I guess IndiaBix is enough for quant and verbal but practice logical section quest from some other book.
Finally at 8 pm the process was over. It was a tiring day with lots of new experiences I was satisfied with what I have shown.
Friends be confident, Be prepared and lastly prepare at least one technical subject in which you can grill them in my case it was networking since I wasn't good at coding I have to pull them in my comfort zone.
4 days later, They declared results unfortunately only 10 students were selected and out of which 2 were from ECE including me. I consider my self quite fortunate especially the number 9 made my day.
ALL THE BEST !!!
