Cripling or buckling load is directly proportional 2 moment of iertia of a body. So if moment of inertia decreases buckling load also decreases. And at less load column will buckle.

Buckling is sudden sideways failure of a structure subjected to high compressive stress.

It occurs due to bifurcation (small change in parameter causes sudden change in behavior).

Bending stress = (moment*least lateral dimension)/moment of inertia.

F = M*B/I.

If bending stress(F) increases when M.I. Increases therefore it will buckle along minimum M.I.

Moment of inertia is inversely proportional to bending so column will buckle in the direction of the axis which has least moment of inertia.

The force is applied on the column then just buckle is known as buckling load.

Buckling load is depend on the deflection of beam.

Buckling means rotating of any object by some angle about an axis. Eg. In crane, you may have seen a hook which lifts the load.

Why be take minimum value of moment of inertia about x-axis and y-axis in determining buckling load of built-up section?

Manohar said:   9 years ago
Due to its size, its axial displacement is going to be very small compared to its lateral.

Deflection called buckling.

Moment of inertia is resists of angular acceleration, bending occurs only in min moment of inertia.

Buckling occur due to vertical load is applied on the component when it is in horizontal position.
