Strain energy is the energy which is stored in the body which we can get back after removal of external force. It is only possible only up to elastic limit. Above which rest of the stored energy released in the form of heat.

Strain energy is the energy, When stored the energy to any material such the material is not breaking is called strain energy.
For example - We draw the Strain - Stress Diagram to applied the force Strain and Stress both are increase but become a point our material just breaking this point is Elastic Point.

Whenever any elastic body is elongated within elastic limit the energy stored is known as strain energy. Ex. Spring.

Area under strain and stress up to breaking point is known as toughness of that material.
