If we push the body to reduce the length, the reaction would be an equal and opposite tensile force and hence tensile stress.

Stress is compressive but strain in axial direction would be compressive whereas in transverse direction it must be tensile.

Opposite forces are like that compressive forces, so stresses induced to the body the dimensions of body would be change.

Generally stress is ratio of load to area. If the load is compressive then the stress is called compressive stress.

Push is nothing but applying force along the axis so that those two forces are in opposite hence it compresses.

Induce tensile stress because material resists push by internal tensile resistance so tensile stress induced.

When the resistance offered by the body is against the compressive load it is called compressive stress.

When bar is stretched stresses are tensile. If forces are reversed compressive stresses will be there.

The right answer is A. As the body is pushed hence the tendency of body will be to extend its length.

Sress is tensile but strain will be tensile (along length) and compressive (along width) both.
