This project is one of the largest irrigation projects in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is a multipurpose project. The water is used mainly to irrigate agricultural land in the drought-prone Marathwada region of the state.

It also provides water for drinking and industrial usage to nearby towns and villages and to the municipalities and industrial areas of Aurangabad and Jalna district. The surrounding area of the dam has a garden and a bird sanctuary.

Godavari is the second longest river of India after Ganga, originates from Bramhagiri mountains at Triambakeshwar in Nashik, Maharashtra and flows east for 1465 km (910 miles approx) to drain itself into Bay of Bengal.

This project is to build an earthen dam on Godavari having height of 41.30 mts and length of 9.998 kms. The power generation capacity will be of 12 MW. Every dam creates a reservoir behind itself and the name of the reservoir of this dam is Nath Sagar Jalashay.
