Octane number is used to calculate the quality of fuel. Octane no. is used for petrol. It is calculated by checking the total no.of parts of ISO octane in a mixture of ISO octane and n-heptane. Greater the octane number the greater is the calorific value and lesser the emissions.

It is also because it is a reactive metal.

The led content in the petrol reduces the volatility as it forms a layer on petrol but the led content reduces milage and gives more gasses in engine so private petrol bunks cannot maintain quality while govt bunks maintain with low led content even loss of petrol quantity.

It reduces combustion of petrol and prevents knocking which catches fire easily.

Tetraethyl lead is added in petrol (gasoline) because it increases octane number of gasoline and it will result to reduces antiknocking activity of engine piston.

1 ml tetraethyle lead is added to every 4 liters of gasolene in order to increase the octane number of gasolene, as more the octane no. less is the knocking and better is the quality of gasolene.

It is mixed with gasoline (petrol) as an inexpensive additive and allowed octane ratings and thus engine compression to be boosted significantly.TEL was phased out in view of the toxicity of lead and its deleterious effect on catalytic converters. It is still used as an additive in aviation fuel for piston engine-powered aircraft.
