What is the scientific name for washing soda?
Sodium carbonate (also known as washing soda or soda ash) , Na2CO3 is a sodium salt of carbonic acid.
Sodium bicarbonate or sodium hydrogen carbonate is the chemical compound with the formula NaHCO3. Sodium bicarbonate is a white solid that is crystalline but often appears as a fine powder. Since it has long been known and is widely used, the salt has many related names such as baking soda, bread soda, cooking soda, and bicarbonate of soda.

Baking soda (NaHCO3).
When it reacts with water (H2O) it produce CO2 gas and Na2CO3 (sodium carbonate or washing soda). CO2 gas thus produced make the food stuff soft and spongy as happened in bread and other bakery products hence name given Baking soda.
Another thing is baking powder which is a mixture of baking soda and tartaric acid.
Use of tartaric acid is to neutralize the basic sodium carbonate or washing soda produced when baking soda reacts with water and thus sour taste of sodium carbonate is masked.

NaHCO3 (sodium bicarbonate) is called as baking soda because when heated, it releases carbon dioxide gas, which is responsible for the rising of cookies, doughnuts and bread.
In this way, it is baking things, so it is also called as Baking soda.
