Since in sliding the point of contact rely over a surface it experience greater friction where as in rolling the point of contact is a point or atmost an axis, it experience less friction than sliding.
Eg: sliding a spherical stone over a slant surface is more difficult than rolling the stone over that surface.
However, the surface also plays an important role in friction. i.e If the surface is too smooth (eg:ice) the friction is same in both the cases. Since the surface opposes no reluctance on the bodies.

Sliding: To move over a surface while maintaining smooth continuous contact.
Rolling: To move forward along a surface by revolving on an axis or by repeatedly turning over.
