It is for current gain and not for voltage gain.

Common collector is used as voltage follower/voltage buffer circuit as Av=1.

Common base is used as voltage amplification circuit as Av=600 and Ai=1, current follower circuit.

In common emitter Av=-200 and Ai=-100..It offers very high power gain.
