a^0 can be written as a^3 x a^-3=a^0.
This in turn can be written as a^3/a^3 which is equal to 1.

Let x^0=1.
We can write x^ (1-1) =x^1*x^ (-1) =x^1/x^1=1.
We can write x^ (1-1) =x^1*x^ (-1) =x^1/x^1=1.
