Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the prestigious FAO Agricola Medal 2026 on May 20, 2026, at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations in Rome, Italy. The award was presented by FAO Director-General Dr Qu Dongyu in recognition of India's achievements in food security, sustainable agriculture, and rural development. The honour also acknowledged initiatives such as climate-resilient crop development, micro-irrigation through the ‘Per Drop More Crop’ program, and the use of digital technologies in agriculture. The event marked a historic occasion, as it was the first visit by an Indian Head of Government to FAO Headquarters in three decades.

The Draft National Water Metro Policy, 2026, proposes the rollout of sustainable water-based urban mobility systems across 18 major Indian cities. The initiative, reviewed under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, aims to promote eco-friendly and cost-effective transportation using inland waterways. The project will be implemented in phases, beginning with cities such as Guwahati, Srinagar, Patna, and Varanasi. Inspired by the success of the Kochi Water Metro, the policy emphasises electric and hybrid ferries, multimodal integration, and reduced infrastructure costs compared to conventional metro systems. The initiative is expected to improve urban mobility while supporting green transportation and sustainable development goals.

Bhopal became the first city in India to deploy solar-powered “Algae Trees” as part of an innovative initiative to tackle urban air pollution. Installed under the Bhopal Smart City project, these biotechnology-based systems use living microalgae cultures to absorb carbon dioxide, reduce harmful PM 2.5 particles, and release oxygen into the atmosphere. Each unit operates as an outdoor photo-bioreactor powered by integrated solar panels, enabling sustainable and off-grid functionality. The project demonstrates the growing use of green technology and renewable energy solutions in urban environmental management while promoting cleaner air and climate-friendly infrastructure in densely populated city areas.
