The 86th All India Presiding Officers’ Conference was organized in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, from 19 to 21 January. The conference was inaugurated by the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Anandiben Patel, while the keynote address was delivered by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The event witnessed participation from Presiding Officers representing 28 states, 3 Union Territories, and 6 legislative councils. Key discussions during the conference focused on the use of legislative technology, capacity building of legislators, and enhancing accountability in parliamentary and legislative procedures.

India’s first open-sea marine fish farming project represents a significant milestone in the country’s Blue Economy strategy. The project was launched in the Andaman Sea and implemented in collaboration with the Andaman & Nicobar administration. Using advanced cages developed by the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), the initiative focuses on finfish farming along with open-sea seaweed cultivation. By tapping offshore marine resources around Andaman, the project aims to promote sustainable aquaculture, enhance seafood production, and improve the livelihoods of local fishing communities while reducing pressure on coastal ecosystems.

India’s first sleeper version of the Vande Bharat train marks a major advancement in long-distance rail travel by connecting Kolkata and Guwahati. Designed for overnight journeys, the train covers the route in around 14 hours and links eastern India with the Northeast. The sleeper configuration offers improved comfort, modern interiors, and enhanced safety features compared to chair-car versions. This connectivity is expected to boost tourism, trade, and cultural exchange between West Bengal and Assam, while also strengthening Indian Railways’ push towards modernization, self-reliance, and improved passenger experience.

The 28th CSPOC Conference, bringing together Speakers and Presiding Officers from over 60 Commonwealth countries, was held in New Delhi. Chaired by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, the conference focused on strengthening parliamentary democracy and institutional development. Key sessions addressed the use of artificial intelligence in parliamentary processes, the impact of social media on governance, public engagement strategies, and the well-being of MPs. Hosting the event in India’s capital underscored the country’s role in fostering international parliamentary collaboration and showcased its commitment to democratic practices and legislative innovation.

The 5th Tri-Services Veterans Day parade was organised at Marine Drive and witnessed the participation of over 500 veterans, including gallantry award recipients. The event was flagged off by Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan and attended by senior officers from the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Mumbai is notable for being the only city in India to host a city-level Veterans Day parade. The parade commemorates the retirement of Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa in 1953, honouring the contributions and sacrifices of veterans across the three services.
