Gneiss is a widely distributed rock which undergoes various metamorphic processes from already existing either igneous or sedimentary rock. So you have to choose wider one. That is sedimentary metamorphic rock.

Gneiss is a rock with higher crushing strength and basically having good mechanical properties in comparison to other metamorphic rock. So it is obtained from metamorphic action over granite and granite is igneous rock.
