Gneiss is a high grade metamorphic rock, meaning that it has been subjected to higher temperatures and pressures than schist. It is formed by the metamorphosis of a granite, or sedimentary rock.
Gneiss displays distinct foliation, representing alternating layers composed of different minerals.
