It's tougher than Silicon carbide, which is chemically inert to the material like steel, alloy, iron etc.

Silicon carbide wheels are harder and more brittle than aluminum oxide wheels.

The aluminum oxide will cut through steel, as well as softer metals like brass, annealed iron, and steel alloys.
