Aptitude - Simple Interest - Discussion

Discussion Forum : Simple Interest - General Questions (Q.No. 11)
11.
A sum of money amounts to Rs. 9800 after 5 years and Rs. 12005 after 8 years at the same rate of simple interest. The rate of interest per annum is:
5%
8%
12%
15%
Answer: Option
Explanation:

S.I. for 3 years = Rs. (12005 - 9800) = Rs. 2205.

S.I. for 5 years = Rs. 2205 x 5 = Rs. 3675
3

Principal = Rs. (9800 - 3675) = Rs. 6125.

Hence, rate = 100 x 3675 % = 12%
6125 x 5

12005-9800=2205(SI FOR 3 YEARS).
SI FOR 1 YEAR=2205/3=735.
SI FOR 5 YEARS=735 X 5=3675.
PRINCIPAL 9800-3675=6125.
6125 AMT SI IS 735.
SO,100 AMT SI IS 735/6125 X 100=12%.

A = P+I.

1) 12005 = P+5880 (Total interest for 8 years=5880).

2) P = A-I = 12005-5880 = 6125.

3) SI = PNR/100, 5880 = 6125*8*R/100.

4) So R = 5880*100/8*6125= 12.

SI for 3yrs = 12005-9800=2205.
SI for 1 yr = 2205/3=735.
(SI)Now cal for 5 yrs =735*5=3675.

Principal amt=9800-3675=6125.
SI=PNR/100.
3675=6125*5*R/100.
R=12.

@Insaan

Actually the question is wrong because it is simple interest while it should be amount. And your solution is correct if it would have been amount.

How come the difference between 12005 and 98000 is S.I?

I think it should be an Amount where P and I is included. Someone, please help me to get it.

Hai Asd,

In the question we can find "The sum of amount 9800 " it means, principal + SI=9800. So p=9800-SI of 5 years.

I hope u got it.

@Vipul.

2205=9800*3*R/100.

This wouldn't work as the interest is always calculated on the original principal amount which in this case is 6125.

If I want to solve it with 1 years interest i.e. 735 = (6125 * r * 1)/100.

Then the answer is not coming. Why? Someone, please explain.

@Xyz

For calculationg SI for 1 year we divide it by 3 first and then we want 5yr SI, so we multiplied it by 5 got it.

Hi @Kashinath:

In question principle is not mention, Only S.I is mention, that's why All People are taking S.I.
