How many 4-letter words with or without meaning, can be formed out of the letters of the word, 'LOGARITHMS', if repetition of letters is not allowed?

Explanation:

'LOGARITHMS' contains 10 different letters.

Required number of words = Number of arrangements of 10 letters, taking 4 at a time.
= 10P4
= (10 x 9 x 8 x 7)
= 5040.

I have one doubt that why permutation is used?.

Here mention that repetation not allowed. Permutation is allowed this that is, ab, ba is allowed.

Why are you taking 10c4 so many ways like 10c2, 10c5?

If I take total 10 letters, so I calculate 10! = (10*9*8*7*6*5*4*3*2*1).

So please explain clearly.

We can't use permutation here because they have mentioned that no repetition is permissible and in 4 number word only possible solution is 210. 10C4 = 210.

I am not clear with this. They gave a condition that repetition is not allowed. when we use 10p4, (i.e. is permutation) it satisfy the given condition?

! implies that it is a multiplication sign up to 1. It is neither a permutation nor a combination. For ex 4! implies that 4*3*2*1=24. is it clear guy?

After Selecting the letters in(10 * 9 * 8 * 7) ways those letters can be re-arrange in 4! ways.....

So, according to me answer should be 5040 * 4!

Permutation = when ordering is considered.
(means here to form a word ordering is important).

Whereas in
Combination - ordering is not considered.

If position of word matter (no repetition allowed) Then we have to use permutation.

And if no position matter we have to use combination.
